For sailing, few venues are as instantly recognisable
Surrounded by the mountains and landmarks of Rio de Janeiro, Guanabara Bay was the venue for the sailing competition at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Seven race areas were used during the Games, with four located inside the bay and three outside it, creating a wide range of conditions for sailors to master.

Guanabara Bay has a reputation for shifting and unpredictable winds, with conditions capable of changing significantly across the racecourse. During Rio 2016, sailors experienced everything from 10–14 knot south-easterly winds to days when the breeze failed to materialise altogether.
Reading the breeze, identifying pressure and adapting quickly will be crucial — particularly in the SSL Gold Cup, where racing is built around intense battles and direct competition between national teams.
For the sailors, Rio therefore offers much more than a spectacular backdrop. The bay will become another competitor: constantly changing, demanding attention and rewarding those who can understand its rhythm.

A decade after Rio hosted the Olympic sailing competition, the venue once again becomes the meeting point for the world’s sailing nations. This time, however, the gGuanabarafferent.
